چکیده

The issue of the possible presence or absence of jets in GRBs is here re-examined for GRB991216, which has a claimed half-opening beaming angle of θ◦ = 3 ◦. We compare and contrast our theoretically predicted afterglow luminosity in the 2–10 keV band for spherically symmetric versus jetted emission. Jetted emission can be excluded and data analysis confirms spherical symmetry. These theoretical fits are expected to be largely improved by the forthcoming data of the Swift mission. In addition to the source GRB991216, our model has been applied successfully, assuming spherical symmetry, to GRB980519, GRB980425, GRB030329 and to GRB970228.

Investigating the Differences in CO2 Emission in the Transport Sector Across Iranian Provinces: Evidence from a Quantile Regression Model

Improving the quality of the environment is a desired goal of any economy. In this regard, given the important role of the transportation sector in the emission of pollutants, policy makers should focus on identifying the factors affecting CO2 emissions in the transport sector. This study examines the factors affecting the differences of CO2 emissions in the transportation sector in Iranian pro...

Evidence for a Galactic γ-ray halo

We present quantitative statistical evidence for a γ-ray emission halo surrounding the Galaxy. Maps of the emission are derived. EGRET data were analyzed in a waveletbased non-parametric hypothesis testing framework, using a model of expected diffuse (Galactic + isotropic) emission as a null hypothesis. The results show a statistically significant large scale halo surrounding the center of the ...

Ray-tracing and Interferometry in Schwarzschild Geometry

Here, we investigate the possible optical anisotropy of vacuum due to gravitational field. In doing this, we provide sufficient evidence from direct coordinate integration of the null-geodesic equations obtained from the Lagrangian method, as well as ray-tracing equations obtained from the Plebanski’s equivalent medium theory. All calculations are done for the Schwarzschild geometry, which resu...

Observation of X-ray lines from a gamma-ray burst (GRB991216): evidence of moving ejecta from the progenitor.

We report on the discovery of two emission features observed in the x-ray spectrum of the afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) of 16 December 1999 by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. These features are identified with the Ly(alpha) line and the narrow recombination continuum by hydrogenic ions of iron at a redshift z = 1.00 +/- 0.02, providing an unambiguous measurement of the distance of a GRB...

Extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray emission at high energies

A diffuse and approximately isotropic high-energy photon background has been known to exist in the xray regime since 1962 [1] and a similar background was observed by the SAS-2 satellite at high energies [2]. Generally, isotropic or nearly isotropic emission may arise from extragalactic sources or an extended halo around the galaxy. It may result from superposition of many unresolved point sour...
